Jakwob @ The Social - Jan. 17th [TICKETS]

" Jakwob first appeared via some major appreciation in the blog world for his bootleg of Ellie Goulding's 'Starry Eyed', before bolstering further support with his remix of 'Under The Sheets'; he's since gone on to remix the likes of Kid Sister, Robyn, I Blame Coco, Empire Of The Sun, Temper Trap, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Penguin Prison, Audio Bullies, dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip and has remixes forthcoming for the likes of Labrinth and Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly.

With champions such as Radio 1's Huw Stephens, Zane Lowe, and Annie Mac, the NME, Dazed & Confused, Mixmag, The Guardian, RWD, and beyond, the 21 year old is in the curious position of having just finished his final year at university, completed while juggling a busy gig schedule, production work, and daily remix requests. "

The Social is going big this new year with this big name hailing straight from the UK. Known mostly for his remixes as mentioned above, this heavy dubstep producer is releasing some of his own tracks which can be heard on his website below. DâM-FunK & Master Blazter Live @ Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn, New York & New D-F Tracks! [DWNLD]

Earlier this month Unda aka Undaground Tha Illest (1/3 of the Blunt Guts Nation crew) and myself had the privilege of seeing DJ Spinna, DâM-FunK & Master Blazter tear it up @ Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn, New York! DJ Spinna opened up the show with an ambient-funk set that had the entire park groovin' to the rhythm. DâM-FunK soon followed with his trademark, multitalented, backup band; Master Blazter. The band is composed of Computer Jay workin' the keys, J-1 slaughtering the drums and D-F doing everything musically possible! DâM put on one hell of a show. He was on the keyboards, doing Key-tar solo's all over the stage and jumping into the crowd all while singing every note perfectly at the same time. Check the high light reel of the show below:

With the album releasing on June 22nd, The Legendary Roots Crew has released an album sampler for "How I Got Over" to prevent a leak like the majority of the latest album releases. Get a taste of every track off the album below.

Give the last track on the album; "Hustla" a listen, the beat samples the crying auto tuned baby from Youtube and it actually sounds really dope. If you don't know what I'm talking about: Baby T-Pain

After giving every song on here a taste, my mouth is left with an after taste of CLASSIC!

Take Live Set @ The Drake Underground [DWNLD]

The other night; the up and coming beat maker from L.A.'s Alpha Pup Label kicked off his new album release, "Only Mountain" by performing one of the best sets I have heard in Toronto since the last time Nosaj Thing came around! The evening was started off with an Ableton Live Workshop konducted by Take himself to help aspiring artists in T-Dot by learning from a professional. Take let everyone in on some of his secrets and techniques to his craft and the audience was truly appreciative. Check out the video of the workshop below.

Ableton Live Workshop W/ Take:

The workshop was followed by two opening sets by Toronto Producers/DJ's Ultragamma and MyManHenri. When Take finally came on, the crowd erupted as he began his set with a bollywood remix and playing others throughout the set. I have to say, his set was nothing like his albums "Only Mountain" or "L.A. Series #2" as his albums are far more mellowed while his set was neck-breaking! He did play songs from his album and various remixes including my personal favorite of the night: A Remix/Tribute Of Slum Village's "Fall In Love" that the crowd just couldn't help but sing along to. You can skip ahead in the video below to 13:40 minutes into it to see that particular remix. The majority of his set is in the video below. Check it out!

HOOOOT SHIIIIIIT!

After the workshop I had an opportunity to converse with Take about music production and music in general. I also got a copy of his debut album "Only Mountains" from Take and did not stop listening to it the entire ride home.

An Oldie But A Goodie = Goldie

An Oldie but a goodie says it all. A golden oldie? Yes. That's right, I'm covering none other than the best of drum n' bass; Goldie. If there were a drum n' bass 100 class it would be centred on the works of Goldie. The man himself started off creating the Metalheadz label and going on to being a pioneer in the field of drum n' bass. His first globally released album, Timeless, was the first of its kind to shoot right up on the top albums charts. I personally highly recommend downloading this album or even buying the album on vinyl. It's one of those classics that you must have to fully understand music.
With this slight piece of history on the man, I come to point where I covered his performance live, during the winter of 2009, live in Bangkok. I had been spending my winter vacation begging for a performance to see live and there it was: Goldie and Judge Jules live. Judge Jules himself, another golden oldie in the field of house was enough to secure my vote to see him but I was intrigued by Goldie. I had never really ventured to the realms of drum n' bass and there wasn't a better introduction than this concert. And then, there I was, bare meters from the legend himself, Goldie. He had recently been on an Asian tour with a group of MCs in Saigon and other Asian hotspots. This performance in Bangkok was to be him, doing it solo in front of the biggest drum n' bass fans of Bangkok.

The performance itself was very intriguing. I had no idea what to expect. He showed up and immediately energized the room that had been sitting around anxiously awaiting his arrival. He ripped it apart. The high bpm and the very soulful voices during the choruses of each song were throwing off every and any kind of dance that any Bangkokian could pull off. It was so different that many people were just leaving the room to see Judge Jules, a realm that is much easier to dance to. They weren't understanding the point. The point is to experience a new style of music. To journey outside of your cave and try something new. I stayed. I wanted to experience the full performance.
It's hard for me to this day to rank or rate the performance that Goldie put on. On one level, he is an innovator in music. On the other, his djing ability isn't amazing. He doesn't seem to capitalize on moments in which he could make the song bigger than it truly is. I feel as though his producing ability is greater than his live performance ability. At the same time, going on youtube and seeing other performances of his live, it's hard to say.
Goldie left the scene extremely early that night. The room was practically empty with everyone next door listening to Judge Jules ripping it up. I left and went next door as he packed up. I blame his poor performance live on the people and their fear of trying out something new. I'm honoured to have been in his presence and to have even heard his music. It has made me try new styles which I believe is a mission accomplished. I may also be swayed by the fact that he also did appear on my favourite movie, Snatch. All in all, I highly recommend his music to anyone out there that enjoys drum n' bass or is simply looking for something different.
And yes, the golden studs in his teeth do shine when he's performing live. Oh, and yes, he did leave with a girl that night. Like I said, mission accomplished.
