Onra - Deep In The Night EP [Stream]

" Globetrotting producer Onra has staked his claim as one of the most exciting beat-makers of the past few years, thanks to releases like his Chinoseries collections (made from scratch with samples found while traveling Asia) and the Pitchfork-acclaimed Long Distance LP. All the while, his electrifying live MPC performances around the world -- everywhere from the Red Bull Music Academy in Bucharest and Giles Peterson's Worldwide Festival, to LA's down-and-dirty bass sanctuary the Low End Theory -- add new dimensions to the cosmic grooves Onra puts on tape. With his first release for Fool's Gold, the Deep In The Night EP, Onra continues to chart new musical territory. The EP's five tracks meld the snap of vintage jheri curl R&B with squiggling disco synths and deeply funky, late-night vibes. From the new jack swinging "After Hours" (ft. T3 of Slum Village) to the moody, screwed loops of closer "Hold Tight", Deep In The Night's cut-and-paste danceability proves a must-listen for any occasion. After all, it's always after hours somewhere... " - Fool's Gold Records

Slum Village - Dirty Slums (Mixtape) [DWNLD]

In 2008, after Slum Village dropped their album, "Villa Manifesto", the rumours were that it would be the last project the legendary Detroit collective would ever put out. Having lost two major components of the group, J Dilla and Baatin, it seemed like a sad yet conceivable notion. Despite the rumours, nearly two years later, we are now surprised with the Mick Boogie presented mixtape, "Dirty Slums". This version of Slum Village consists of original member, T3, Dilla's younger brother Illa J and longtime producer for the crew, Young RJ. The 20 track project features a variety of hip-hop names including De La Soul, Rapper Big Pooh, Phonte, Black Milk, Phife Dawg, Joe Scudda, Big Sean and many more! While the majority of the production is taken care of by Young RJ. It may not be the original SV but they're keeping the legacy alive with this one.

Baatin - Helleven (Prod. Waajeed) [Stream]

" Baatin was the eldest of my friends. Born Titus Prentice Glover, we met in the 3rd grade at Courville elementary. I knew then he was a different type of dude.
There was a wedding I went to with my family – needless to say the the star of the show was little Titus. Swagged out in an all white suit, dancing and entertaining the crowd. A true showman since a young buck.

Slum Village - Tell Me (Prod. J Dilla) (Unreleased) [Stream]

NEW SLUM VILLAGE!!! This is one of the first tracks the legendary crew ever recored together and the beat was made before Jay Dee even had a drum machine! Just....wow. Listen and read the full story behind the record as told by Bling 47's Waajeed below.
" While some consider Dilla’s strong suit to be production, others look to his rhyming for inspiration. This early Slum Village track, “Tell Me What You Want” is a fine example of his ill penmanship. It was one of the first efforts as Baatin, T3 and Dilla came out of the Senepod crew name and became Slum Village. At the time Dilla didn’t even have a drum machine, so this beat was actually made using the “pause and record” tape method. It was never released. Enjoy " - Waajeed (Jeedo)

Rapper Big Pooh - They Say ft. Phife Dawg & T3 [DWNLD]

What we have here is three members of three legendary rap groups that are no more...Former Little Brother member, Rapper Big Pooh, pulls former A Tribe Called Quest member, Phife Dawg, out of hiatus along with former Slum Village member, T3, to remix They Say off his recent solo album, Dirty Pretty Things. The trio talk about group dynamics and breaking out on solo tips. The sad thing is we'll probably never see another LB, ATCQ or SV album again.

This video/album, to me, is a very sad tribute and farewell to one of the greatest hip-hop trios ever as this will be the last SV album ever. RIP J Dilla, RIP Baatin....RIP Slum Village.

Take Live Set @ The Drake Underground [DWNLD]

The other night; the up and coming beat maker from L.A.'s Alpha Pup Label kicked off his new album release, "Only Mountain" by performing one of the best sets I have heard in Toronto since the last time Nosaj Thing came around! The evening was started off with an Ableton Live Workshop konducted by Take himself to help aspiring artists in T-Dot by learning from a professional. Take let everyone in on some of his secrets and techniques to his craft and the audience was truly appreciative. Check out the video of the workshop below.

Ableton Live Workshop W/ Take:

The workshop was followed by two opening sets by Toronto Producers/DJ's Ultragamma and MyManHenri. When Take finally came on, the crowd erupted as he began his set with a bollywood remix and playing others throughout the set. I have to say, his set was nothing like his albums "Only Mountain" or "L.A. Series #2" as his albums are far more mellowed while his set was neck-breaking! He did play songs from his album and various remixes including my personal favorite of the night: A Remix/Tribute Of Slum Village's "Fall In Love" that the crowd just couldn't help but sing along to. You can skip ahead in the video below to 13:40 minutes into it to see that particular remix. The majority of his set is in the video below. Check it out!

HOOOOT SHIIIIIIT!

After the workshop I had an opportunity to converse with Take about music production and music in general. I also got a copy of his debut album "Only Mountains" from Take and did not stop listening to it the entire ride home.
