I got to catch Ramadanman this year at DEMF, and among veteran superstars, Ramadan more than held his own throwing down a set of incredible creativity. Where Brainfeeder failed to sound new and exciting, Ramadan produced tracks of varying speed and intensity that kept you moving like when you were eight and drunk off the Kahula-milk your mother gave you to put you to sleep. Still in his early 20s, Ram is pushing electronic music in the right direction through his own production as well as through the music of his record label, Hessle Audio.

Don’t Change for Me off of his 2010 EP shows his ability to absorb styles into something new and youthful. A tight drum beat appears, solid within itself, drum and bass inspired. It keeps pace with his other juke speed music, but is more chill, more sexy, and more dreamy. Melodic keys come in that remind us of the grimy space music of Hyperdub, with haunting and nostalgic vocals (without being whiny like Burial at times). The best part about Ramadanman is that he takes older influences and pumps youth and energy into his sound, remaining cool, collected, and bumping. Great late night track, fat bass, and a maturing and calming sound from our hero.
